The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in American history. It was written in 1776 by Thomas Jefferson and other members of the Second Continental Congress, and it declared the thirteen American colonies to be free and independent states. The Declaration is a powerful statement of the principles of liberty and equality, and it has inspired people around the world to fight for their own freedom. The Declaration of Independence is divided into three main parts. The first part, called the "Preamble," states the principles that the Declaration is based on.
